Why Sewing Is Better Than Knitting

Dear Ann,
Oh calm DOWN. The title was just to get a rise out of you. Knitting is the One True Hobby–I know that. It’s just that yesterday, I discovered the fun of Pfaffing up a Log Cabin.
But First, A Word From Our Sponsor
The word is “dragon”:

Cristina’s baby boy Elio gets ready to go out wearing his mother’s design, the Dragon Jacket.

Talk about Cute Overload. Elio is cuter than a Japanese flying squirrel in that thing.
Back To Our Program
An afternoon in the company of my new German friends, Herr Gingher, Herr Pfaff, und Fraulein Rowenta, yielded one completed square:

Between the lunching and the tea-ing, and the gabbing with Cristina and Cheryl, this square was a day’s work. Sewing log cabins is good exercise. You cut a strip, take it to the machine, sew it, get up, press it, walk back to the cutting table to cut another strip. Rinse and repeat. Choosing the fabric for the next strip sometimes took me a while. I like to pick the Just Right Fabric. You know me: a skein of Noro is about all the stimulation I can handle; all those print fabrics colliding was like a laser show at a Jefferson Airplane concert. Totally awesome.
I barely got started on a second one:

Where am I going on my Pfaff Journey of Log Cabin discovery? Hopefully, someday, somewhere near here:

Yes, I want to live in a world where a bed can have a vase of flowers on it. Is there anything wrong with that? I think a fair number of souvenir tea towels with printing on them are going to be sacrificed along the way. Just saying. If you find me in your kitchen pawing through a drawer, pat me down for old calendar towels before you let me leave. Feedsacks? Lay ‘em on me. Extra points for foreign languages and proper names. (Image from this book).
Carrie liked them, by the way. She went over each strip to identify which ones came from our house and which ones had been snipped from Cristina’s stash. (Cristina has a SERIOUS Martha Negley issue, by the way. Yards and yards of twigs and logs. Not sure an intervention is warranted, but somebody should keep an eye on her.)
Stay tuned tomorrow for news of a HOT HOT charity eBay auction for an amazing handknit. Yes, arrangements are being made for the legendary All-Noro Afghan to leave my home……I’ll cry all the way to the post office.
Love, Kay
